Be prepared. Here are a few items to be aware of when it comes to sexual assaults.
Statistics show that most sexual assaults are committed by someone that the victim knows. Strangers are a threat - no doubt. But only about 10%-20% of sexual assaults are committed by strangers. Here are some things you can do to be prepared and ready when an attack happens:
- If you feel uncomfortable to be in someone’s presence trust your feelings and take steps to distance yourself. Don’t be afraid to make a scene if necessary.
- Be observant and aware of your surroundings, avoid dark alleys and parks where an attacker could hide.
- Be careful if using alcohol or drugs; you are more vulnerable when intoxicated. Keyword: rape drug
- Do not pick up any hitchhikers or stop on the roadside to help a stranger in a stalled vehicle; instead use a phone in a safe location to call help.
- Stay in your car if your vehicle breaksdown and call for help.
- Be cautious about making contact with those you meet on the Internet. Meet in a public area. Bring a friend.
- Don’t be embarrassed to use security staff to walk you to your car at work, school or when shopping.
